ABOUT BRETT

P1480635.jpg

On the cutting edge of pop, folk, and blues, Brett’s love of music and community have brought him around the world and back. This East Coast singer-songwriter’s knack for wordplay has charmed audiences internationally (“Vacancy Signs”), and his instrumental stylings recall greats like Jason Mraz and Jackson Browne (“Benches in the Park”).

Born and raised in New Jersey, his crooner father taught him about music and romance through his renditions of the Great American Songbook. His mother, meanwhile, introduced him to the pop-rock hooks of John Mayer and Dave Matthews. At that musical intersection, one could say that Not Quite Love was born.

Brett’s debut album, Not Quite Love exists in a meditative space. True to its name, he spends its runtime reflecting on lessons learned. Not Quite Love isn’t a figment of your imagination–it’s reality blended with fantasy. It’s a lingering glance, a gentle touch. Two halves that don’t quite equal a whole.

Not Quite Love is a love letter to his past work as much as it is several big steps in a new direction. The framework left behind by long nights in college spent listening to the entire John Mayer catalog is still there (“Slow Down”), but there’s some of his dad’s Broadway background in its sweeping, romantic moments, too (“Waiting”). It’s also the first time that Brett has played piano on a record (“Stranger Things”) or explored otherworldly synth instrumentation (“Not Quite Love”).

Brett says, “Overall, this album was a step forward in the evolution of my sound. My previous body of work is largely acoustic guitar driven. Leaning more in the folk direction. However, for this album, my producer encouraged me to pick up the electric guitar and develop more of an indie rock sonic world.”

Brett continues to cut his teeth at festivals, competitions and major performance spots around the country, such as the Tucson Folk Festival and Black Bear Americana Festival. Brett has performed in front of a crowd of 17,000 at a Penn State University talent competition and won, and also shared the stage with DNCE as a PSU alum later on.
